The Chachapoyas

They were also known as the “Warriors of the Clouds”. This culture lived in the Amazonian Andes surrounded by cloud forests of the nowadays Amazonas Region. The Chachapoyas inhabited an extensive territory. However, based on a 2013 BBC documentary, only 5% of the Chachapoyas sites have been uncovered!

Kuelap Fortress

Its construction began in the 6th century AD. It is situated at an altitude of over 3000 meters amidst cloud forests on a crest above the valley of the Utcubamba River. It covers an area of 6 hectares. The massive walls of the fortress reach from 10 to 20 meters in height and consist of finely worked limestone blocks weighing up to 3 tons. Kuelap is composed of 550 structures and stone water canals. It used to be home to 300,000 people.

Museum of Leymebamba

This museum houses about 2,000 artifacts of the Chachapoyas having a great historical value. For instance, 219 mummies and their burial offerings were found at the Lagoon of the Condors.

Revash

The mausoleums of Revash, situated at 2,800 m.a.s.l., represent a Chachapoyan necropolis. These are collective tombs placed in either natural caves or holes excavated into a rocky wall of an imposing cliff. According to the Peruvian archaeologist Federico Kauffman Doig, the mausoleums are replicas of real houses used by people of this zone. Its typical feature is red and cream decorating.

Karajia

A burial site is comprised of anthropomorphic sarcophagi situated on an inaccessible cliff that guards mummified bodies of the most important Chachapoya´s aristocracy for centuries.
