DESCRIPTION

TOUR MARAS -MORAY -SALINERAS

you will visit in the tour the district of Maras, archaeological site of Moray and Salineras.

MARAS

A quaint village that is noticeable for its attractions from the pre-Hispanic, Colonial and Republican eras. Its streets and typical Colonial doorways are decorated with coats of arms and shields dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

MORAY

Our next stop shows us a unique archaeological site. One can see their farming terraces that were dug out into the ground by the Incas. The terraces have got some irrigation canals and they served as a prototype of a greenhouse. The lowest terrace is made in a depth of 30 meters and the average height of these platforms is 1.80 meters. This “greenhouse” served the Incas for experimental purposes with various crops. It has up to 20 different microclimates or temperatures, representing each platform, as John Earls says, a difference of around a thousand meters because as it goes down, the temperature rises and as it goes up, the temperature goes down.

SALINERAS

The famous Peru salt mines are located northwest of the village of Maras. They are formed by more than 3,000 small pools. The local salt has been exploited since the Inca times as a means of economic exchange. Nowadays, it has been used by the native community of Pichingoto. The salt mines are made of salty water springs that spring to the surface from inside of a mountain to supply the pools. When the water vaporizes, the salt is solidified. Subsequently, it is processed and used for the region consumption. The salt is also a favorite local souvenir.
