Trip Overview

DESCRIPTION

The traditional 43-km long Inca Trail to Machupicchu is considered one of the best treks in the world due a rare combination of its exquisite natural beauty of flora, existence of endangered species and mysterious Inca sites.

For that reason, you can see there an abundance of vegetation, variety of orchids and ferns and observe rare species such as the Andean spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus), the pudú (Pudu mephistophiles) – the world’s smallest deer. On the way, we pass through mysterious archaeological sites that are not accessible by any means of transport. For instance, Qorihuayrachina, Llactapata, Runcurakay, Sayacmarca (or, so-called Inca Tunnel), Phuyupatamarka, Intipata, Wiñay Wayna and Inti Punku (Sun Gate).

The way covers diverse ecological areas ranging from high-placed deserts to subtropical Andean cloud forests. The latter has got such dense vegetation that it evokes a feeling of being discovered for the first time. Finally, you reach the Lost City of the Incas: Machupicchu!

INCA TRAIL TO MACHUPICCHU

DAY 1: CUSCO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – KM 82 – LLACTAPATA – WAYLLABAMBA

Early in the morning, we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to later take you by private vehicle to the town of Ollantaytambo. There, we have breakfast and we shop the last necessary stuff for the trek. Then, we get on our vehicle again to continue until the so-called Km 82 at Piscacucho. This is a trailhead and checkpoint of the 4-day Inca Trail to Machupicchu. After 2 hours of walking, we arrive at the Inca archaeological site of Llaqtapata. These two Quechua words mean a “village” (Llaqta) and a “high place” (Pata). Our Tour Guide shows us around the Inca site and he/she explains to us that it used to serve agricultural purposes due to its many platforms.
